One thing I love about trying out new places for a halal full English is coming across places that feel like proper small town local cafés. Pie Republic is one of those places.
This British restaurant is in a residential East London area and true to its name, serves hearty pies as well as breakfast, pastries and full on meals. Having been on a bit of a breakfast crawl that Saturday morning, Zohra and I stuck to the ‘Mini English Breakfast’ (£5.95). A larger size (‘Full English Breakfast’) is available for £7.95. This has double the amount of everything in the mini breakfast as well as a cup of tea. In my haste to try the breakfast, I forgot to take a picture of the interior. Sorry!

On the plate: one fried egg, one sausage, one turkey rasher, one hash brown, one toasted bloomer bread, baked beans, mushrooms and half a grilled tomato.

Everything in this breakfast tasted really good. I liked that they used bloomer bread instead of the standard out-of-a-packet white bread most places use. Unusually for my anti-chicken sausage palate, I actually liked the chicken sausage at Pie Republic as it had a good flavour and a bit of spice. For once, Zohra and I both agreed on the taste of the turkey rashers which were also nice. The mushrooms were in some sort of sauce which we assumed was butter. This was different to other breakfast spots and was definitely appreciated.
Overall, there were no faults with the breakfast at Pie Republic and for once Zohra and I had the same opinions on a full English! The cafe is well designed with a good vibe and free wifi. At £5.95 for the mini breakfast and £7.95 for the larger version which includes a tea, the breakfast at Pie Republic is great value for money. The only downside for those travelling to the restaurant is that it’s not located near an underground station. If you live in the area or are happy to take the TFL rail to Forest Gate, it’s worth checking out.
Breakfast is served from 12pm on weekdays and from 10am – 3pm on weekends.
