There’s something I don’t quite understand about nasheeds being played at restaurants. I wrote about this in my review for Kobe Sizzlers in Leicester. Fast forward a few months later and I found myself at another restaurant playing nasheeds, this time in London over breakfast at The Gourmet Hut. This small Whitechapel burger joint serves breakfast on weekends and it’s definitely different to the standard halal full English breakfasts one gets across London.

On the plate: Chicken sausages, glazed turkey bacon, two hash browns, one fried egg, mushrooms, potato squares, tomato, beans, one toast, sprinkle of cheddar and parsley (£8.50).

Full English [£8.50]
The breakfast came out in a grill pan and I was quite amazed that it didn’t have scratches all over it given how many have probably been used in place of plates to serve the Full English. The chicken sausages were sliced and were well spiced. It was quite interesting to see buffalo sauce on top of the grilled tomato and this added another quite unique flavour to the dish. The maple glazed turkey bacon was also cut up and the potatoes tasted sweet which we weren’t expecting. Turns out they add sweetener to the potatoes when they fry them for the first time. Neither myself nor Zohra were fans of the sweet tones from the bacon and the potatoes as they didn’t complement the savoury tones from the rest of the dish. The breakfast was interesting but for £8.50, we didn’t think it was great value for money especially when you factor in the location. Around £7 would have been a more appropriate price point.
The service as a whole was good but I wasn’t a fan of the nasheeds playing over the speakers. Hearing ‘no matter where you are, Allah knows’ doesn’t really create the best ambience in a restaurant.
Breakfast is served from 10am to 3pm on weekends.
