The 1st of February 2018. The day Zohra could finally eat meat following her participation in Veganuary. Coincidentally, the 1st of February was also the first day of our trip to Paris. As we drew up an itinerary for our meticulously planned trip we came to a realisation – Zohra’s first lunch post-veganuary was going to be….at a vegan restaurant!
Luckily, there were plenty of meat-filled meals in our trip to make up for the fact that Zohra had to have a vegan meal beyond January (I know I make it sound like a chore, but she does actually enjoy plant-based food). We arrived in Paris, dropped off our luggage in our hotel and walked down to Le Tricycle – one of Paris’ best vegan spots. The storefront doesn’t have a name above it so it’s easy to miss especially when there are people queuing outside.

Right from the start it was clear that this was a popular lunchtime spot. The restaurant has a tiny space when you walk in for you to order and a staircase leading to seating upstairs. This bright space, which was quite warm despite the Parisian winter, had around 20 covers. The seating area was decorated with hanging plants with the seats being tables and benches (some tables had chairs).

The menu was written on a large chalkboard on the wall downstairs. Zohra ordered the vegan bowl (€10) which was a large bowl consisting of mushrooms, broccoli, pickled cucumber, seaweed, onion., squash and rice. Zohra thought it was a pretty good bowl in comparison to what you can get in London. She appreciated the variety of ingredients in the bowl. I found the bowl quite tangy because of the rice vinegar but Zohra seemed to appreciate that.

I ordered the ‘Dogtor Dre’ which was a ‘hot dog’ topped with guacamole, fried onions and coriander. The sausage itself was quite smoky and the bread had been toasted which I appreciated. I did notice that without the guacamole it was quite dry but with its addition there was plenty of flavour. The one thing I didn’t like was that the hot dog was served on a thin tissue. As I was eating the hot dog, the guacamole would fall onto the tissue which then soaked into the tissue and mixed with it meaning I couldn’t pick it up with a spoon and add it back to the hot dog.

Le Tricycle certainly lives up to the hype as one of the best vegan restaurants in Paris. We’d recommend a visit to keep you well fuelled as you visit the city.
