Review: Asta Luego's, London
Reviewed by Zohra
Last month, I ate ten burgers in twelve days. All in the name of Halal Gems of course. About half way through that epic experiment, and before my stomach started mooing, I thought I should switch from beef to something else.
I live in Harrow, where the nearest gourmet burger is a forty minute journey from home. There was one burger joint closer to home that I hadn’t tried, and so I walked over one afternoon. Asta Luego’s has been around for more than a year, but my first opportunity to try it was a sunny afternoon before the wet summer descended upon us.
My friend and I are always looking for good lamb chops. So far nothing has beaten a hole in the wall place in Luton, but we thought we’d give Asta Luego’s lamb chops a go. The chops arrived charred on the outside, as you’d expect. The only thing I wish was different is that the chops were well done and not medium. What made up for this was the coating on the outside. The flavour was pretty awesome, and moved Asta Luegos’ lamb chops firmly into our top five for chops in London.
Feeling less enthusiastic about beef that day, I had a bite of the Asta Signature Burger and thought it was a good burger. But on to the hero of this story: the Chicken Halloumi Uppercut.
This has to be one of the best chicken burgers I’ve had in a long while. The bun held together really well, the cheese was perfectly melted, and most importantly there is something magical about the halloumi and chicken combination.
The folks at Asta Luego’s make several kinds of fries, including flavours like Mexican Chilli, Fruit Chutney, Boerewars Relish, and the one we chose: Sour Cream ’n’ Chive. Unfortunately we were so full of burgers we couldn’t finish the fries, but having your own flavour choices and the fantastic donkey sauce made for an unusual experience with fries. Its great to see the team at Asta Luego’s taking a simple side of fries and making them more interesting.
All in all, Asta Luego’s took chicken burgers to new heights, and is well worth a return visit. Finally I’ve found some sort of good quality burger that doesn’t require a field trip from home.
