Two decent halal breakfast spots on one road in South London? Yes, this means we ventured to Upper Tooting Road on our halal breakfast crawl.
Our second spot for the morning was Tartine Artisanal, a bakery and cafe with rustic vibes. The cafe was a lot bigger than we expected it to be and we even bumped into a few friends while we were there. We sat down at one of the old school train carriage style booths at the back of the restaurant and ordered the ‘Tartine Full Breakfast’.
On the plate: turkey bacon, sautéed potatoes, mushrooms, beans, fried tomato, two fried eggs, one slice of toasted bloomer bread (£7.65)
First impressions when our breakfast was brought to the table was ‘no sausages?’! This was the only place that we have ever been to that serves a halal breakfast with no sausages. However, they did have a generous portion of turkey bacon which gave the breakfast a good ratio of meat to non-meat items. The waitress asked how we wanted our eggs and we chose fried eggs as standard. I appreciated the use of toasted bloomer bread (I wouldn’t expect anything less from a bakery!) but it didn’t come with any butter. The sautéed potatoes had great flavour but the mushrooms didn’t go down well with either myself or Zohra. We’re not sure what the issue was with the flavours there but there was something about the taste that we just didn’t like.
Tartine Artisanal offers Daddies brown sauce which is a change from the other breakfast spots where HP brown sauce is offered. I found the sauce to be too thin in consistency for my liking so if there’s one thing I would change it would be switching to HP. The turkey bacon was good although it didn’t have a distinct flavour.
Overall, I thought the breakfast at Tartine Artisanal was good (minus the mushrooms and lack of a sausage) but slightly overpriced. I would probably have paid somewhere between £6.50 and £7.00 for the breakfast given the items and location. The cafe is a nice place to chill, maybe do some work and just hang out with some friends. It was a little loud when we were there but I imagine that’s because it was the weekend.
Breakfast is available until 11am on weekdays and 5pm on weekends.
